Crosslinks - Prayer Points - May 2006

Crosslinks aims to make Christ known through the proclamation and teaching of God’s Word in the power of the Holy Spirit by supporting Gospel workers across cultural and other boundaries in co-operation with local churches and mission and relief agencies.

Crosslinks works mainly with churches in the worldwide Anglican Communion, particularly in Africa and Asia, but it also supports cross-cultural workers in Britain.

Kenya: James and Caroline Poole (Sundays 14th and 21st May)
James and Caroline Poole are training church leaders in how to understand and teach the bible at AICMAR (African Institute for Contemporary Mission and Research) in Butere, Western Kenya.

  • Praise God James and Caroline now have their own electricity supply and a much more suitable vehicle that will enable them to take the training to pastors who would not be able to get to courses at the AICMAR centre.
  • Pray for James in leading Preaching for Preachers sessions that these will help and encourage many in their ministry to be faithful and effective preachers of God's word in their own communities.
  • Pray for James and Caroline in teaching a Bible Basics course that this will be a helpful guide for leaders in reading, interpreting and applying the bible.
  • Pray for local friends, particularly for Caroline and Benjamin (toddler), in the isolation they feel.
  • Praise God for the news of another Poole expected in late October. Caroline plans to have the baby in Nairobi, where she has been receiving excellent ante-natal care.
  • Pray that James and Caroline will stand firm in Christ, and be sustained by the Word of God in the power of the Spirit.

Manchester: The Plant (www.theplant.net) (Sunday 28th May)
The Plant is a 1½-year old church "outside the box", aiming to reach students and young people from an unchurched background in the area around the university campuses in Manchester.

  • Praise God for 2 girls who attended the Christianity Explored course who have now accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. Pray that they may grow to maturity in Christ. Pray that other attendees who have not yet put their trust in Christ will continue to be challenged by the call to repent and believe the gospel.
  • Pray for Joe and Sally teaching a bible overview course, that this will help members to develop a solid foundation for their faith and a clearer understanding of how God's word fits together.
  • Pray for the development of Kids' Club on Sunday mornings; at the moment there are only a handful of children in the church.
  • Pray for the planning of appropriate evangelistic events to tie in with the World Cup. (Yes, football!)

The Gambia: Sam and Martha Owen (Sundays 4th and 11th June)
Sam and Martha Owen married last year and are now working as Crosslinks mission partners in the Gambia where 89% of people are Muslim and 4% Christian. The evangelical church is in its infancy.

  • There are many people working hard for the church in the Gambia, but most are from other West African countries and there are few Gambian Christians, few Gambian leaders, and very few churches which feel "indigenous". Pray for wisdom in knowing how to serve the Gambian people in this situation.
  • Pray for the Bible/Koran comparison course that has been started on one campus, that students will be drawn to Christ as a result and that Christians will be better equipped to talk about their faith to Muslims. Pray that similar courses may be started at other campuses.
  • Pray for Sam in administering the Moore College correspondence course for 30 church leaders (mainly) and running tutorials for this course. Pray that Sam may be able to help these leaders to apply scripture in their own context.
  • Pray for Martha in teaching a remedial class at Bakau Upper Basic school.
  • Pray that Sam and Martha may find great blessing in their marriage together.
